Dorothy is upset that her life is boring until she meets author Barbara Thorndike. Barbara instantly dislikes Blanche and Rose. She takes up all of Dorothy's free time so she can't spend time with her friends. Blanche and Rose make multiple attempts to get along with her. Barbara finally invites them all to an exclusive and restricted club. However, she takes issue with Sophia's date. The club's policy will not let him in. Dorothy questions her as she finds it offensive. Barbara continues to use the word "tolerate" to cover several things and people.
