“I am 42 old woman who gave birth to a very healthy little boy, naturally conceived and gave birth via spontaneous labour! I feel seen and heard!!
I had to advocate for myself nearly every OBS appointment (deemed high risk due to age and BMI which has NEVER related to my individual body ever)
I came to the 7 month mark of my pregnancy exasperated by the lack of continuity of care, scare mongering by a rotating door of different obstetricians who had no idea of my history or previous discussions - that ended up in tears in the waiting room waiting to see the unit manager (who’s solution was to advise me that I could to go to another hospital).
I had to constantly remind them of my results and asked them to stop comparing me to statistics and look at my individual health.
I was pressured to undergo an induction and placed under a lot of stress being made to feel like I was the one being irresponsible when I knew 100% I wasn’t.
I held out and advised I would be happy to monitor weekly - a few days later, bubs came on his own, at the 40 week mark on the exact EDD date on his dating scan. They kept telling me I was overdue by following the ridiculous “when was your last period” mode of measurement.
The midwives on the other hand were guardian angels sent from heaven!
The few times I got to have an appointment with them, I was seen, heard and understood.
Thankfully the pointy end was a complete different experience.
The birth was typical of delivering the first time and the team of midwives that looked after me, made all the stress of my previous interactions with the hospital just dissipate. I kept thanking them all throughout my labour and it still makes me tear up thinking of how safe and cared for they made me feel.”
