“I started with episode 7 because of my special interest in the Salam Witch Trials. The host sounds professional and is well spoken. The guest on this episode is introduced as a “witch expert” but has such a poor grasp of grammar, popular details of the Salem Witch Trials, correct use of vocabulary, and of pronunciation that I wondered about her level of expertise.
The way that she stumbles over words and concepts is distracting. Because the host is professional, it illuminates the inadequacies of the guest. She doesn’t present as an expert at all. I consider myself well-read in both popular and esoteric literature on this topic. So, after listening to the guest expert, I think I might be an expert, too.
After she grossly mispronounced Tituba (a pivotal character in this topic), I stopped listening and returned later, just to grit my teeth and finish it. There are too many colloquialisms and vague, even distorted, facts. The host often steps in to clarify and to continue the narrative when the guest wanes.
I think some advance editing could have turned this into a very interesting episode, as the topic is fascinating. But, as such, it was disappointing. However, I plan to listen to other episodes, hoping this is a one-off. Given the apparent skills of the host, I wouldn’t throw away my expectations based on a single episode.
