“Loved the Dartmoor ghost stories episode. I live in Plymouth and we were taught about the hairy hands at junior school. I had never heard of the other ones on this episode but wanted to add what I felt was the 2nd most famous, after the hairy hands. The old plymbridge railway line that snakes through the plum valley is now a popular cycling path from Plymouth towards tavistock. Several miles up the path, near Dewerstone is an abandoned platform of a station and a long tunnel that slightly bends so you can’t see the other end. When youre halfway through the tunnel you are in complete darkness. The story is, when the line and station was in use, a landslide damaged the track and the solitary guard had to go into the tunnel with an oil lamp in an attempt to alert an oncoming train. He was killed instantly. My friends and I were in this tunnel one night investigating. From what we could find there was absolutely no one else with us, but after being there an hour we heard what sounded like the screeching of a distant steam train and the glow of a lantern being waved side to side at the station end of the tunnel. We took off as quick as we could. Haven’t been back since.”
