“I’ve read the books, seen the film and read articles aplenty on the events that took place in the Lafayette Bar and Grill, Patterson, NJ in the early hours of 17 June 1966. As a boxing fan and historian, this story has always interested me. So this podcast was a great find for me. Nevertheless, I have been very impressed with the quality of the series, particularly Steve Crossman’s delivery and the investigative journalism skills he has used to piece together this story.
The actual tapes were an incredible discovery in their own right, but the documents Steve uncovered and the case he builds from them are fascinating. As a boxing historian, I have seen the ugly side of American culture, especially with regard race it has been an ugly shadow looming over the sport, from the ‘colour line’ imposed by the first heavyweight world champion, John L Sullivan to the persecution of the first black world heavyweight champion, Jack Johnson. The murders of three people at the bar occurred during the backdrop of civil rights protests and political turmoil - including the stripping of the world heavyweight title from and fight ban of Muhammad Ali. This series brings this to the fore and provides some context to the crimes that took place that fateful night.
This is a great series which attempts to discover the truth of what happened, without prejudice or hidden agendas. Sadly, we may never know exactly what occurred that night but this podcast certainly provides enough anecdotal and circumstantial evidence for us to make up our own minds.
You don’t need to be a fan of boxing to listen to this series, it is just a great whodunnit story with plenty of twists and turns along the way.”
