Hit-or-miss
This podcast is really hit-or-miss. Its quality at any one time depends heavily on which of the large revolving-door cast is on the panel on any one episode, and how they feel about whatever it is they're discussing. Some of them rarely contribute to the discussion, and instead bring up general pet peeves at every turn (on one episode, about the 80s teen comedy "Real Genius," one panelist kept complaining about the movie's lack of realism. At length. At every opportunity.). People like this are unpleasant to listen to in real life when you can respond to or ignore them. When they are on a podcast you are listening to, using every chance they get to defect from the conversation and ruin the party, they are intolerable. When the show is bogged down by skirmishing of this sort, it is intolerably boring. When it is not, the listener is still kept wondering why exactly one should care about these people's opinions--they always seem like sincere fans, but never like people who have sat down and decided in advance why they like or dislike something. It is rare that this podcast is more than a substitute for meeting up with your friends and talking about the books you like. The sound quality is also problematic.

Great show with great (and knowledgeable) speakers. A welcome desert island in the ocean of tech podcasts.
