Translated to English it means "Check please, with the retiree discount." It’s like magic. You’ll pay up to 50% less on almost all goods and services. It’s sort of a national thank you to Panamanian senior citizens. But the truly cool part is that the descuento applies to American expatriates. A descuento of this size might actually make the difference between being able to afford to live abroad or not. The program you need to sign up for is called the Residency Retirement Program. Write that down. How much will you save? How about less than $6 to get your cholesterol checked at the local health clinic. A Five-Star brunch of mimosas, waffles, eggs, meats, cheeses, sushi, chicken, filet mignon, shrimp, mahi-mahi, and dessert that works out to cost about $30 for two people. A first run movie ticket is $2 at the local cineplex. A half day of maid service runs $10, and unlike much of the western world, retirees receive courteous, prompt service everywhere they go. Crazy, we know, but travel to Panama will likely be an entirely different experience than what you are used to - in a good way. Retiring in this tropical Central American country, where a discount is REALLY a discount, might be the best financial move you ever made.
