“I have always grown roses but with my growing obsession with house plants I decided to try growing a few vegetables as well. I found this show though a suggestion on iTunes because of some other podcasts that I listen too but I quickly ran through the whole show catalogue.
I am not surprised that I gain tons of knowledge from this show. I’ve learned how to care for my urban garden and trouble shoot issues. But what I wasn’t expecting were all of the extra feelings and point of venue that I gained. I got a worm composting system because I wanted to fertilize my plants and then I realized I was reducing what we added to landfills. Not much is ready to eat yet besides the sugar snap peas and some strawberries but we get so excited that we eat them before anything even makes it into the house! it makes me think about how much effort it takes to grow these bags of vegetables that we get in the supermarket. I also realized that I shouldn’t be bagging my leaves in plastic. And I shouldn’t be using dyed mulch. I’m getting a green cone to compost what my worms can’t manage and I’m so excited to think about how little I’ll be actually putting into landfills.
Long story short gardening, farming, reducing waste and being a better steward of or resources are all intertwined. I feel like if I had tried to do it all at once it wouldn’t have stuck but the fact that I learned about 1 thing at a time on the joe gardener show the changes have been organic (no pun intended) and therefore will be a lasting part of my families life.
Thanks for all that you do
Amanda”
