Invaluable Podcast
There are many dating or PUA podcasts, and while The Mating Grounds podcasts has some similarities to those, it is both better than and different from them in many ways. First, it brings the scientific knowledge Professor Geoffrey Miller has of attraction and mating from years of scholarly work and reading as well as—how should I put this?—the considerable practical experience Tucker Max has accrued through his many hook-ups and relationships chronicled in his best-selling books. This is an excellent pairing because it allows them to place the findings from the scientific literature in conversation with real-world mating, dating, and attraction situations. Some commentators have said that if scientific knowledge helped guys attract women, many young men who are into science would have no problem picking-up women. But are they reading evolutionary psychology and allied work? No, they’re probably immersed in physics, engineering, or computer science, which is not the same sort of science at all. Also, some in the PUA reference evolutionary psychology, but don’t really understand it (the total misunderstanding of “peacocking” is a classic example). Professor Miller is an expert in the science—indeed, he did some of the groundbreaking research or advised students who have. My only complaint is that this podcast wasn’t available when I was in my teens and 20s!
