Interesting perspectives
If you like the format of In Our Time, and you’re interested in medieval Irish history then you will probably like this. The host, who has a background in the subject has guests on who are also academics who can speak on a particular topic. The only downside is that it assumes a background in Irish history that people who didn’t go to school in Ireland probably don’t have. I am knowledgeable about European medieval and early modern history in general but most of the figures mentioned in this podcast I’d never heard of before. There is a lot of focus on what can actually be known about a person or event and analyzing sources with a critical eye based on who wrote them. It’s a good supplement to other podcasts on Irish history that follow a more “storytelling” format because once you’ve gotten the standard story then you can make sense of what the host and guest are discussing. There is also a focus on the reality of life for people at that time and the different social and material conditions that give context to the “stories” about all the fighting between the different kings.

Highly informative show with the best experts in the field. Also, the host and her guests have a way of making you feel as if you are in the snug with them, next to the fire, on a damp afternoon. Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in medieval Ireland.
