3: Hurricanes
Listen now
Description
The hurricane season in North America lasts from June to November, so this month we speak to John Cangialosi from the National Hurricane Centre in Florida, to learn all about hurricanes. Did you know that about 70% of the hurricanes that affect the southern and eastern United States originate in Africa, or that strong winds are not actually the most dangerous part of a hurricane? In this episode you will find out more about this, plus what ingredients you need present for a hurricane to form, where you find the strongest winds in a hurricane, why the National Hurricane Centre fly airplanes into hurricanes and just what is the deadliest threat from hurricanes (it’s not wind and it’s not rainfall). We also talk about Hurricanes Katrina, Sandy and Ophelia, we discuss how ex-hurricanes can affect Ireland and how climate change will affect hurricanes in our future climate.
