“To make a long and complicated story short and simple: I have struggled with depression on and off my entire life. I recently went through probably my second most severe bout thus far. I made some short sighted decisions that put me in a bad living situation, a bad working situation, and a bad relationship situation. I was looking to relocate and reestablish my life again somewhere more aligned for my happiness, but (as anyone who has ever struggled with depression will likely understand) I couldn’t find the motivation to take those big steps to make it happen.
After month and months of the daily struggle, I came across your 30 day minimalism game. It was January 10th. I felt motivated to do it. For the first time in months besides the bare minimum I needed to survive, I actually felt like doing something. I decided I would just catch up to the people who started January 1st, so I got rid of 55 items that first day. Two days later my count was up to 333 items purged. By the 15th, I’d surpassed the goal of 465 items for the entire 30 days. I still felt motivated to keep going. It gave me a reason to get up in the morning and do something. I decided I need to fix my situation. I gave my notice at both my jobs that I was leaving. I arranged a place to crash for a month as I got reestablished after I moved. I made it up to 1033 items in 19 days. Then, this past weekend, I moved. All of my leftover possessions are boxed and waiting for me to unpack at my own apartment when I find the right place. I just can’t wait to continue this purging journey. It was a springboard of motivation that got me out of one of my deepest slumps. I’ve decided to continue and keep track of how much I get rid of over the course of the year to see how long I can keep it up for.
I really want to thank you for the challenge that has changed my life. Your podcast is awesome, I started listening to it yesterday and I’m almost caught up. I’ve been playing it in the background as I job and apartment hunt. I guess this didn’t stay very short :P
Thank you for doing what you do, stay shiny! <3
