“First off, love the show, but just wanted to mention that Matrix Resurrections by most estimates cost $190 million just to produce. You can reasonably assume prints and marketing for such a big deal movie adds another $100 million to that number at least. Then factor in theater split and the fact that WB barely gets anything back from ticket sales in China (where it bombed anyway). Hollywood movies need to make most of their money domestically to be successful, so even $100 million domestic would have been a disappointment. 5 years ago $100 million would have been a disappointing opening weekend for a movie if this scale and amount of expectation.
Matrix Resurrection will end up losing WB more than $100 million dollars even old Scott Mendelsohn will tell you that. Frankly, Dune was a bomb and lost money, no matter what WB says or that they greenlit part 2. WB just wrapped up easily the worst, most catastrophically disastrous financial year for a movie studio in the history of all time. It’s too bad, cause I tend to like the films WB makes, but that doesn’t alter the reality of how much money their slate lost in 2021. Matrix was undoubtedly the most crushing blow. Even the Suicide Squad was a hit compared to that.”
