“There are important themes of patriarchy and the role it played in Ballard’s rise. That being said, The Church of Jesus Christ ( Tim’s church) did disavow his behavior and emphasized that he did NOT have church approval for his sexual victimization of women. Criticisms of church culture and doctrine are legitimate, but it doesn’t seem like they consulted with a single current member in their coverage, and some of the reporting is frankly inaccurate. To completely ignore official church statements when criticizing a church either displays cheap sensationalism or poor journalistic integrity, and in a story this important it is unfortunate to undermine the rest of the reporting by these kinds of glaring omissions. Tim Ballard deserves the consequences of his inexcusable actions, and his victims deserve coverage that doesn’t cast those who shared his faith as naive and ignorant.”
