Pitcairn visitor
I visited Pitcairn in 2003 when the trial was in process. I was sailing on the Picton Castle. It was a bit of a sham since the men were led out of jail to be able to assist with the long boats to get our crew and goods on land. They also participated in the island festivities with our crew. My husband grew up with a romantic notion of Pitcairn. His grandparents had sailed there 7 times on their circumnavigations and they are featured in the island museum. My husband’s middle name is Pitcairn. We stayed with Tom Christian who is Fletcher Christian’s descendant. The islanders are a fun, kind, and generous. But we did learn more of the dark history of rape and assault, although people would downplay it and say that “girls there mature more early”!! Sadly many of the women who were raped had left the island and people didn’t want to talk about it. Thank you for your research and putting together this podcast. I hope it can help the victims heal.
