This is the last chapter, Chapter 9,  of Losing Asia, published by Johns Hopkins in 1996.   It tries to summarize the book's theme, which is the esthetic cost of economic  growth.   Part of an earlier chapter appears in the episode called "Rabindrathe Tagore's Kushtia Home."
