“As it’s name affirms, this podcast is dedicated to exploring ways of applying stoic philosophy into everyday life, and is not intended as an academic or scholarly inquiry. Such an approach is true to the aims of stoicism as expressed by those who first developed its way of thinking and acting.
The podcast is well produced and consistent in its quality and regularity. The host, Simon Drew, knows his subject well and communicates an authenticity and sincerity that are important to this series. He’s got a good voice and delivery, and he conveys a professionalism too often missing in the realm of podcasting.
The podcasts are successful in introducing bits of stoic insight from both ancient and occasionally more recent sources, and then showing how these can be applied and practiced today. This is not a history podcast — it is stoicism in action (and if you think that’s an oxymoron, well, this series will help you understand why it’s not).
The podcast only falls short (for me) in that it seems to be exclusively secular in its focus, and as such at times can sound a bit more like a self-help or “motivational” aid than the deeper type of engagement I think its creator desires. Men like Aurelius and Rufus were traditionally-minded (which is to say conservative) in their world views. They were also quite religious and committed to the God(s) of their understanding. Stoicism was held in high regard by many in the early Christian Church, particularly St. Justin Martyr. In as much as stoicism concerns the nature and order of reality and acting in accordance with that nature and order, it can only profit (and be profited by) an exploration of its more religious and spiritual elements. This is my bias, of course, and I don’t mean to unduly burden Simon Drew with it. I’m merely pointing out where this podcast occasionally falls short for me. Those who might want to read a book that thoughtfully considers stoic philosophy by the light of the Christian gospel should see Kevin Vost’s “The Porch and the Cross.”
All in all, the Practical Stoic is the best available podcast dealing with stoic philosophy, and more generally one of the better podcasts being produced today.”
