Do you wish HPST wrecked your whole a** life?
I’ve been a huge fan of Casper and Vanessa talking through Harry Potter series; but always wished they would take their particular brand of careful thought and connection between media and the world we live in would expand beyond that! Some of that itch was scratched in the Hot and Bothered podcast, especially when they did the Twilight series (which, what a trouper to read those books in this day and age) but I missed the particular flavor of Casper and Vanessa’s discussions. Well, the wait is gone and they’re here to rip apart and rebuild all my life and media with their lovely insights. I’m so excited to look at new issues and questions and use the media around us to help us think carefully about the world we’re living in. It’s one thing to think of one series as a tool for sacred reading and practices, but another to realize that the whole world is a tool we can use to guide ourselves. The first episode was a lovely look at what parenting means, what it means to be entrusted with care of children, and what power means over people that you are not solely responsible for the care of. Looking at things as diverse as Mama Mia’s songs and articles about Jeffery Epstein really threw into relief that these tensions really infuse all aspects of parent’s lives. I don’t think I had a good appreciation of how stressful it must be to love kids like this until I heard how much of Vanessa’s thoughts her care for these kids takes up. I’m overjoyed to have these brilliant and careful thinkers looking at a broader array of themes, problems and texts. This is likely going to be the highlight of my Mondays from here on out.
