“What a let down. It’s hard to believe this came from Critical Role. I’m completely a Critical Role champion and I’m just shocked at how difficult this was to listen to. I know early episodes can be rough but everyone read their lines and the GMs might as well have been ChatGPT. The whole thing felt so mechanical. The only thing I can think of is they are trying to teach people how to play D&D by delivering their lines so mechanically but it was clear every line was being read. That completely loses the actual play feel and then just becomes a retelling narration of the game they played last week at home.
If the voice acting was good maybe it would be redeeming but it was difficult to listen to with unlikeable characters. I found it more pleasant when the actors spoke out of character in their normal voices than in their character voices.
As I think about it, I think ChatGPT would have had more variety in how it moderated combat so I take that previous comment back.”
