I understand…
I grew up with the message that everything was my fault and that I should know how to do things without any guidance whatsoever. I’ve primarily chosen female docs and mostly experienced medical procedures as opportunities to completely let go and turn myself over to whoever’s caring for me. With one exception, I’ve had really good care. But after listening to this podcast, I can see that empathy was often missing about my discomfort with male docs.

Heard episode one on This American Life. Anxious to listen to the rest. Classic story of an all too typical medicine’s response to a woman’s pain and the long lasting effects. Shocking but not.

A fascinating examination of how and why women’s pain is routinely dismissed that intersects with other compelling social issues such as the fentanyl crisis and medical care in the US. All that and true crime! (The one star reviews are from people who admittedly didn’t listen to the podcast)

This show is compelling, and feels eerily true.
