“I came into this podcast having listened to other Riverdale-centric podcasts and being disappointed in their lack of recall/knowledge of the episodes, and so it was a huge relief to find this podcast wherein (at least one of) the hosts actually actively takes notes and can talk about small goofs and scenes in chronological order, not to mention the fact that John and Kaitlin themselves are very charming. But I find myself having to knock off two stars for a few reasons, the biggest of which is the very long and irrelevant tangents that they go off on, talking about subjects barely related to Riverdale, which on their own aren’t usually a huge detriment but for someone who really just wants to hear people talk about Riverdale and their reactions to it, an extra ~20 minutes per episode talking about non-Riverdale things makes it feel as though the hosts don’t value the listeners’ time. While I’m sure that’s not the case at all and that John and Kaitlin are super super lovely people, having to sit through conversation after conversation about irrelevant topics, just waiting for them to get back to the subject at hand, has gotten exhausting. I came for the detailed Riverdale recaps, stayed for the hosts’ love of Veronica Lodge and Archie as a sexy lamp, but I’m going to have to duck out on this podcast because I cannot find the time or energy to keep forcing myself to sit through unfiltered content. Other minor complaints (that may just come down to personal preference on my part) include the hosts’ misinterpretation/lack of acknowledgment of key events (like the initial reveal that Alice was a Serpent), unwarranted condescension and judgment of teenage characters going through incredibly traumatic events, and lack of nuance when it comes to discussing subjects like suicide, LGBT issues, classism, and familial dynamics. I hope this doesn’t come off as pretentious or offensive, this podcast really did bring me joy, and I genuinely wish Kaitlin and John the best. Maybe I’ll come back some day when I feel like I’ve been missing Kaitlin’s Betty voice.”
