“As with many people, I enjoy listening to SERIAL. I found another podcast that discusses SERIAL a few weeks back. I had hope there might be others. That is how I found THE SERIAL SERIAL.
Now, the first episode sounded like what I suspect it was…
A.V. Club staffer 1: ‘Oh no, we dropped the ball on how important this podcast SERIAL really is! WHAT SHOULD WE DO?!?’
A.V. Club Staffer 2: ‘Well if we jump in an just at this late in the game we need to set ourselves apart! Let’s just get in there and get dirt, you know just start bashing it, tell everyone that she’s fallen under his spell and that it’s completely biased. Oh and we’ll talk about how it affects us, how it makes us feel. That’ll be compelling!’
So this is what I think of the first episode: Late entry, spiteful of the SERIAL podcast staff, really, really rushed (like getting caught with your pants down), shoddily researched, unlistenable (turned it off with 5 minutes left or a 15 minute podcast!) and quite unprofessional.
The second episode of THE SERIAL SERIAL had been released the same day I found it. I had already blindly downloaded both episodes, so after shutting off the first episode prematurely, I thought I should at least try the second episode.
This is what I thought about it, slightly improved. I think the biggest improvement was at addition of Ignatiy Vishnevetsky. In my opinion HE should be hosting/moderating the show because he not only spoke well, but allowed for intelligent discussion beyond his own opinion and he seemed to be far more research ready and able to discuss not only the SERIAL episode at hand but information from earlier in the podcast’s run.
I think the fact that Marah Eakin said a whole lot less as the episode wore on was probably the best part of this episode. She, not unlike her use of the word ‘like’, does not need to be in this podcast at all. A great improvement to this band wagon podcast would be her omission.
How this podcast is as popular as it is WITHOUT a rating or review is beyond me. Speak up people, the A.V. Club shouldn’t be the only ones with an opinion!”
