I’d sum it up like this (btw they were so much nicer!):
Don’t suppress what your story wants to be because you’re afraid of genre pigeon-holing.
Listen to what your story is telling you - this is the way to find the hook especially if it’s buried under a thematic mulch.
The hook is essential in structuring an effective query letter - and probably your novel too.
