An Informative (& Entertaining) Podcast on the Story Craft
Recommended for those looking for more in-depth discussion on the craft of writing story. I first encountered Bassim El-Wakil a few years ago on Robert McKee’s Storylogue website, where I found some of his comments in the discussion forums both interesting and useful, and in particular a series of videos he put together on the action genre and Guardians of the Galaxy. I also attended the Action Day seminar that he co-lectured (primarily lectured?) with Robert McKee in 2015 and ended up leaving with 50 pages of notes. As a life-long story geek, I could probably spend all day watching movies (or reading books) and talking about why the stories did or didn’t work for me. As someone who has chosen to write stories, listening to such discussions can help me see and think about story differently and therefore (hopefully) improve my craft. While I have read countless books and attended countless workshops on the writing of story, none have satisfied me at the “why” level the way the work of Robert McKee and Bassim El-Wakil have. What this podcast in particular has given me is additional drilling down on the specific genre (action) and format (long-form) that I am writing, as well as further clarification of storytelling principles in general through Bassim’s analysis of a variety of different films and TV shows. It should be abundantly clear to anyone listening to the podcast that Bassim has a passion for story (not to mention the action genre). I have also been impressed with not only his eye for detail in stories, but his ability to articulate those details. He is paired in the podcast with a co-host, Luke Lyon-Wall, who does an excellent job not only on the Twitter and website back-end, but in helping to steer the discussion, raise important points and questions, and bring about the final take-aways at the end. They are also very entertaining in a room together. I, for one, am frequently laughing.

I love this podcast! I confess I didn't know much about the writing process and now I feel informed and see movies in a new light. I hope for more episodes and soon, disappointed that Highlander 2 wasn't thrown under the bus when discussing bad sequels but hey hoRead full review »
