“This was interesting. I found the journalist’s desire to both-sides the argument and find a middle ground quite laboured though. I would have liked more evidence and to hear more from the people themselves seeking care. They seem not to be criticising the appropriateness of the care, just the delayed access. The lack of evidence base was criticised but then statements about people transitioning for fashion or on a whim were presented without any evidence. Including the opinion of a journalist who has written a book on anorexia is not evidence. So much more could have been said about the political context: this has been a period of unprecedented discrimination and vitriol against trans people. That was relevant to the closure decision.
It would have been great to explore more about access to private gender care - do the rich have access, but without the waiting lists and oversight? .The podcast was strongest when describing the impact of different parties interpretation on the first session - really showed the difficulty of providing this care. For an update it would be good to show how the closure has been used to undermine the legitimacy of similar gender clinics internationally.”
