Description
What comes to mind when you hear the word ‘harmony’? Is it communal “kumbaya,” or is it about actionable consensus?
In this episode we explore the CliftonStrengths talent theme Harmony®: discussing some of the assumptions, perceptions – and misperceptions – of this theme; dive into the ways we have witnessed this talent at work in others we have coached, and; provide ideas and insights to appreciate and support those with Harmony® talents. We also highlight the battle of the overused, underused, or just right application of these talents. Given that Chad has Harmony® in his Top 5 CliftonStrengths, he shares some practical aspects of this talent theme and how those talents have contributed to his success and those of his teams.
Do you easily find areas of agreement while in discussions with others? Can you find consensus amid conflict? Are you by nature, calm or even-keeled?
This calming presence we’ve witnessed with those with high Harmony® talents allow them to see through emotional hijacks and pretentious or deceptive nonsense (better known as B.S.), resolve conflict, and bring others together. Those with high Harmony® talents know constructive conflict can be energizing, building on ideas to move us forward. Chad shared with us another analogy after the show about how his Harmony talents feel about conflict. If the intent of conflict is simply to ‘sling mud’, we both end up covered in mud. But, if we ‘sling mud’ in the same direction, with purpose and towards a goal, we can build a hut...rather than tearing each other down.
“Conflict is inevitable, but contention is a choice” – Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf
