“So, what is fairness? Fairness, just like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. Fairness is a concept which is difficult to grasp and more difficult to explain. For some people, fairness is treating everybody the same. Everybody pays, let’s say, 20% taxes on their income, no matter how much income, $10,000.00 or $100,000.00. 20% is 20%, so it’s fair for everybody, right? For other people, that is not fair, because they think that the person who makes a lot of money can afford to pay more in taxes and should, therefore, pay more, as in “their fair share”. “It’s not fair that some people are rich and some people are poor.” Well, I think it is fair to be rewarded for hard work, so, if you work hard and make a lot of money, that is fair. If you decide not to work hard and you don’t make a lot of money, then that is fair, as well. To me personally, fairness is directly linked to decency, although that is a purely subjective concept, as well.”
