“Great episode as always but just wanted to point out that while the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade was a unit new to combat its main component units were not. The brigade’s primary combat units were the 4th and 22nd Marine Regiments. The 4th Marins was the former 1st Marine Raider Regiment (reorganized as a regular Marine infantry unit and redesignared as the 4th Marines) and was composed of the Raider battalions that saw combat on Tulagi, Guadalcanal, the Makin Raid, New Georgia, and Bougainville. The 22nd Marines saw combat on Enewitok during the Marshal Island campaign. Furthermore, the commander general of the brigade was Brigadier General Lemuel Shepherd who previously served as the assistant division commander of the 3rd Marine Division on Bougainville and much of his staff had similar experience. As such, to say that the brigade was not a veteran outfit doesn’t seem quite right.
