The University of North Carolina Board of Governors awards the O. Max Gardner award to a faculty member who has made great contributions to the human race. This is one of the highest honors the system awards, and this year's recipient is Jay Narayan of North Carolina State University.

Former East Carolina President Emeritus Leo Jenkins is posthumously conferred with the University of North Carolina Board of Governors University Award, which is bestowed for outstanding contributions to higher education. Dr. Jenkins served 31 collective years at East Carolina University.
