Great history podcast
James Houser’s passion and in depth research shine in this podcast. I couldn’t stand Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History with its over-the-top rhetoric and forced drama. Houser simply lets the brutal and captivating history speak for itself. I also enjoy how he focuses on less covered topics such as the Imjin War and Queen Nzinga rather than retreading the Battle of the Bulge for the 101st time. Though the focus is on war, Houser also imparts important aspects of culture and society. One of the few podcasts where I feel like I’m learning something, e.g. the limitations of infantry logistics where soldiers generally max out carrying 80 pounds for sustained campaigns. He also gives some personal opinions (which he prefaces) which all seem pretty reasonable to me. Hope this podcast continues as there’s a lot of interesting, poorly covered history out there.

James has a way of keeping all the key players straight while coherently delivering a story you’re not familiar with. Very pleasantly surprised with the quality of the show!

I'm greatly enjoying this new podcast. The subjects are fascinating and the host (an active duty serviceman with a masters degree in military history) is engaging and he knows his stuff. I'm finding the show to be informative, entertaining, and very well produced. Highly recommended.Read full review »
