“Your discussion of the loss of our Farming Culture was poignant. The same happened in southern Illinois. In the early 1980s I was a grad student in St. Louis and had a side job working with an ethno-botanist. We surveyed the abandoned farm houses in he agricultural region in the Illinois River valley looking for heirloom plants that were left behind. The residents seemed to have disappeared suddenly. Many of the houses still contained furniture, as well as clothing left hanging in closets. Some houses even had dishes still setting on kitchen tables, some with half-eaten meals. It seemed apocalyptic and reminded me somewhat of Pompey. I, too, mourn the passing of this life-way and believe we are culturally poorer for the loss. Thank you for personalizing it so eloquently. What a nice tribute to the Harris Family. I often stop at the ranch when driving up or down the 5, I always enjoy the steaks. Knowing the backstory to this wonderful family will add another dimension to my visits.”
