“The podcast on animal cruelty is a prime example of why people who sit in a office should make opinions about farming. This guy has probably never set foot in a pig barn or any barn in his life. I am a farmer I’m not supporting animal cruelty I don’t agree to that at all. That’s not profitable for the farmer and not what I want for my animals. Not all farmers should have pigs or any livestock, there’s always a bad apple. And in this case it’s farms that do miss treat pigs and that’s not right. But pigs in crates is the best for gestating sows. We built a barn for lose housing because of laws preventing crates. We have more sows then ever with sore legs that are crippled because they fight with each other and hurt each other. Those pigs have to be euthanized because they will never get better and are in pain. That is something I HATE doing as a farmer. I want my animals happy and healthy. I don’t want to have to euthanize a pig because it’s crippled, but I also know it’s best for the animal not to be in pain. That’s why sows should be in crates. Yes it looks nicer in a pen but sows are more stressed and have more leg problems, scratches and cuts in pens from fighting with each other. They fight when they first get moved in to the pen and they fight over feed. That leaves the week one to not get enough feed and has to be pulled out and feed extra. As well the fat one that eats to much gets pulled out to get a normal amount of feed. In a stall we can give the sows the perfect amount of feed to keep them from getting to fat or skinny. When sows are getting feed the squeal. Weather in a pen where they jump on each other hurting each other. YouTube if full of videos of squealing sows in crates. Again it doesn’t look nice to someone who doesn’t know farming and doesn’t do it 365 days a year. That’s why we don’t like people taking videos they don’t understand why we do things we do. As a farmer I want the best care for my animals and I want them to have only one bad they there the entire time there on my farm. That’s not what happens tho then were forced to do something by someone who sits in an office watching YouTube deciding what I don on my farm when I’m the one with the pigs everyday for 12 or more hours a day try my absolute best to care for them the best I can.”
