Eylon Levy is the leading Israeli government spokesperson. You will have seen him doing media hit after media hit, fiercely defending Israel throughout the Israel-Hamas War. But you will not have seen him like this. We sit down together at the historic Jaffa Hotel Chapel in Israel for a deeper dive, a closer examination of what he’s been saying. It was an opportunity to better understand the mind of the Israeli government through the mouth of one man. How did the October 7th Massacre happen? How did a country with the most stringent security in the world be so overcome? Can Israel actually win this war? Is pulverising Gaza actually a sensible strategy? Can an idea - the Islamist-Nationalist ideology of Hamas - actually be defeated? It is an idea reinforced with every victory of Israel, much like a Chinese finger trap, the more you struggle against it, the tighter the grip. Does Israel care what the world thinks? Does Israel need America and Britain? I tried to reach the Eylon beneath the government veneer - he is, after all, a Londoner like me. What does he make of the future of Britain? N.B.
