Fun for a fiend
For true “Wire”’ fans, this podcast is a pleasure to listen to and relive the experience of watching it. It’s been a couple years since I’ve enjoyed myself a good rewatch. I might have reached a saturation point after introducing it to all (I mean ALL) my loved ones, basking in the unrivaled pleasure of witnessing them watch the masterpiece, pushing them through the first episodes (“it’s so slow!” “Just wait. Invest!”), biting my tongue from revealing too much, and (as a white girl) resisting the urge to translate its unfamiliar vernacular to all but my grandmother. As for Season 2 serving as a barometer for true “Wire” fandom, that couldn’t be more spot on. I understand why novices chafe at one of the sharpest shifts the show takes between seasons (3 to 4 is pretty acute too), but it’s not only indispensable to the continuity of this epic, it’s such a richly textured human tragedy with sweeping implications about the slow, painful decline of labor in America, not just Baltimore, and so much more. In fact, “The Wire’s” success at “world building” broadens the scope its themes and message far beyond Baltimore. In someways, Baltimore serves as a proxy-city for stories that take place wherever there’s struggle and strife clashing with ambition and injustice and...life. That said, like all cities, Baltimore has its distinct character which is so indigenous to the series that it’s atmospheric. Finally, as a “white girl,” I confess: “The Wire” did seem like a “black show” to me. Unconsciously, I didn’t feel like its intended audience; but it’s a testament to “The Wire’s” countless attributes how quickly that veneer dissolved. Obviously, there’s no extracting race from “The Wire” but that’s part of what makes it so elucidating and important. Okay. I need to shut myself up now. (But, “oh, indeed!” RIP Bodie. And don’t forget: Prop Joe. Those two...just broke me.) Keep it up!

Just joined a watch group with some friends who want to revisit or watch for the first time. It’s my first time watching. We are going to meet (online of course) and discuss. That typewriter riff in Episode 1 was hilarious! I felt the white out pain.... Can’t wait to ride along with you as I...Read full review »

Tupac lived in Baltimore for a few years in high school. Jemele: loved your work at ESPN and The Undefeated. You don’t need to drop so many F bombs. You are very educated and the cursing just takes away from your message. My $.02. Looking forward to every episode.
