“Hi from Phil in sunny, relaxing Sydney.
It’s excellent to listen to intelligent people discussing intelligent things. It might surprise you but -yes- you are intelligent and I appreciate that.
Now….that clock tower…..
I have a very contrasting opinion to those expressed. As a technical feat it’s truly excellent. As a design my opinion is nothing but scorn. Why in the world would such a building mimic a piece of Gothic Revival as the Elizabeth Tower? A symbol of English Power?
Islamic architecture is some of the most dramatic and dynamic on the planet. I can’t believe it was permitted to build such a grotesque structure (not to mention the hotel - jeez!) within visibility of such an incredible religious site.
I spend a lot of time explaining to my students and associates that is rare that form can be saved by more decoration alone. Yes, Islamic religious buildings are typically covered in tiles but that works within the associated design of the space and helps to define the outcome - not disguise it.
At least they could have changed the bulk ratios to seperate the form from the Elizabeth Tower?”
