An Engaging First Try
To my knowledge this is the first episodic fiction podcast from these creators, and it comes with the rough edges in production, acting, and pacing that you might expect. But beneath any first-steps stumbles is a story I’ve found engaging and intriguing so far. The lack of any exposition or establishment made the first episode feel a bit weird: these things are left almost entirely to the listener’s imagination as the characters carry on with their business. This is always hard to pull off—more so when working only with audio—but a part of me can’t help feeling that the slow flow and frequently awkward dialog amongst the crew might have been bolstered by some more content to keep things moving. Still, each episode has featured enough world-building and intrigue to keep me engaged, and I think that slow, casual-yet-deliberate approach of both the writing and the acting gives the show authenticity. It also built up to a real pay-off with the end of Episode 3, on through Episode 4, and now I’m looking forward to seeing where the rest of it goes more than ever. I’ve been purposely holding off on the complementary episodes and sticking to the main ones, thinking I’d take the vanilla story first and, maybe later, give the chocolate and strawberry bits a try to see how the whole thing works together. I can now say that’s definitely the plan. It’s not hard to imagine that these side episodes add a good bit to the main series. But even if they don’t, what’s in the main story makes for fun listening, and promises forward and upward momentum from the creators and actors alike.

I'm excited to see where this story goes! The episodes have a really great mood and seem to straddle the line between funny and doomy. The atmosphere and characters are all top notch.Read full review »
