Try-hard imitation of Radiolab
This show imitates Radiolab without understanding what makes that show great. Its sound design is slightly whizzy, but for no reason – it doesn’t contribute to the storytelling as Radiolab’s does. And the first episode, at least, buries the lede – what’s the reason to listen? Oh, 26 mins in, it’s about the possibility of AI. It’s co-hosted, but misses the whole point of why that works on Radiolab – Jad and Robert have a genuine friendship and play off each other as the head and the heart might. And it fails to tell a story, although I’m sure somewhere in these topics there are fascinating tales to tell. The BBC is facing stiff competition from US podcasts. It needs to understand why those shows work and adapt that for a British audience, rather than simply rip them off.
