We set off on a 48-hour mission to uncover Alun's family history. After catching a night bus 9 hours south of Mumbai, we had just one day to discover as much as we could about Alun's Polish Grandparents, who lived in Valivade during the 1940s. We struck gold before breakfast, managing to meet the local Governor, who happily escorted us around the village and nearby city of Kolhapur, ensuring the trip exceeded our wildest dreams!
The Polish refugee camp in Valivade was the largest camp for Polish refugees in India. From 1942-1948, around 5,000 Poles lived there, mainly women and children.
