“A highly entertaining, detailed, and compelling rendition of the story, particularly for those who are new to the epic and its surrounding mythos.
If I’m being very critical, the classicist in me could poke at a few details (e.g., Aphrodite’s role, the terms of xenia, a handful of pronunciations). But to do so would rather miss the point, which is that this narrative — like other modern retellings of the story — is not intended to be a strict or cold academic device.
Rather, in the grand oral tradition, it is a living story — told by a passionate narrator and complete with his own narrative choices (and even his own mistakes or slips of the tongue). Jeff Wright brings the story to life and draws audiences in, inviting them to continue the cycle and retell the stories themselves.
Even aside from his additional (and fascinating) post-show commentary, that focus on the narrative makes this a much more enjoyable learning experience than any textbook I’ve ever read. And as a result, I firmly believe it is a far better introduction to the epic than any academic course could ever hope to be.”
