“This is an interesting idea for a podcast slash way for Jamelle to indulge in his taste for trashy movies. They explore the politics and culture of a genre of film that I grew up with, one that is often ridiculous in its portrayal of heroic masculinity. Always amazes me to see how little has changed since the nineties, politically and culturally, even tho we usually focus on the differences.
I just can’t figure out why they haven’t done Sum of All Fears. Is it too late, coming in 2002? I mean you gotta look past that. Not only is it another Jack Ryan but they actually explode the bomb in this movie but they f-ing KILL MORGAN FREEMAN in the process it is truly shocking stuff. Has nuclear terrorism been discussed on the pod yet? Then you factor in the “competent girlfriend” trope and the mix of Eastern European and middle eastern enemies with a Cold War basis and wow just do a pod on this movie already. Srsly checked multiple times for a SoAF episode, could I have missed it somehow?
Five stars. There aren’t any deep revelations, in fact a lot of the episodes listen more like a college level analysis of the films, but it’s still nostalgic and thought provoking to look back to the recent past, especially focusing on the cultural aspects and impacts of the films more than their often questionable screenplays.”
