Moulin Rouge! is an unexpected take on the stage, contrasting modern cinematic techniques and song compilations against Paris in the turn of the century. With references to Madonna, La bohème, Orpheus and Eurydice, Moulin Rouge! led the way for early aughts musicals. It's inspired Mr. Brightside, the Muppets Christmas Movie and Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir's gold medal winning routine in the 2018 Winter Olympics.
