Interesting mystery, annoying host
The producer started the series with a short audio message saying she would not be narrating and that we would not hear from her again because she was going to let the story unfold. But then in the second episode, there’s a long and drawn out recording of the producer and her team throwing around theories and asking, I must say, somewhat dumb questions. (You can’t make an inference about what “Red China” means? Never learned about communism in school?) Interesting mystery, and the two central people being interviewed are charming and charismatic, but not enough to overcome the annoying asides from the producer and her research team.

Narrators talk about phone lines in 1996 like they were using them. Obviously they know nothing of what a “party line” was. I find their interpretation of that time to be very lacking. I would imagine they weren’t born yet or were young children.
