The Barbarian and the Troll is a comedic puppet television series that began airing on Nickelodeon in April of 2021. Joey Mazzarino started as a puppeteer on Sesame Street in 1989.  He’d go on to perform characters such as Murray Monster, Stinky the Stinkweed and Horatio the Elephant.  He joined Sesame Street’s writing staff in 1991 and would become head writer on the show in 2009.  He also co-wrote the screenplays for The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland and Muppets From Space.  I talk to Joey Mazzarino about his career in puppetry and writing for puppets on this episode of Under The Puppet.

Dave Chapman wrote a letter to Jim Henson when he was 11.  8 or so years later he was puppeteering on his first professional gig, Muppets Treasure Island.  Since then he puppeteered Otis the Aardvark for 5 years on the BBC, performed as The Emperor Skeksis in Dark Crystal Age of Resistance and is one of the puppeteers the iconic round droid BB-8 in the recent Star Wars Films.  He also assisted Frank Oz for Yoda’s big return to the screen in The Last Jedi.

Gord Robertson was the puppeteer of Zoboomafoo, the talking Lemur from the television show of the same name.  He also played Bill, the psychopathic ventriloquist dummy on the tv show Puppets Who Kill.  I sit down with Gord Robertson to talk about his career that began as a puppeteer and suit performer on Fraggle Rock and continues to this day in tv shows movies such as the recent thriller Come play.

Mike Quinn’s first professional puppetry gig was working for Jim Henson on The Great Muppet Caper.  His second job was working on The Dark Crystal.  Since then he’s puppeteered on a ton of projects including The Muppets, Muppets Most Wanted, and The Ghost of Faffner Hall.  He also played the role of Nien Nunb in the film Return of the Jedi and he reprised the role in Star Wars episodes VII-IX.  I talk with Mike Quinn about these roles and more on this episode of Under The Puppet.

Noreen Young is an incredibly influential puppeteer, puppet builder and producer who has been working in the business for decades.  She had a hand in creating several iconic Canadian TV Shows including Hi Diddle Day and Pencil Box, she built puppets for TV Shows like Today’s Special and Telefrancais, and she created, produced and puppeteered on the show Under the Umbrella Tree which ran on the CBC and then The Disney Channel for years.
