“Listened to 2 seasons so far! Enjoying the atmosphere and the emotiveness from the male voice actors from each season, but I have to admit I struggled with some of the emoting from the female counterparts. In the first season I wish Sonja would have had more characterization to her and less trope character, but since it was a ‘pilot season’ I think it would be fair to say finding the right tone was still a search for the whole crew. Tony had the teensiest bit more to him to make him tolerable.
Season 2 had a great voice in the Sheriff, Frank and Remy but the grandmother’s voice was a bit grating for someone supposed to be sympathetic. Eva/Ava’s character was incredibly frustrating and cliche with every single way she responded to every situation, and again really found it hard to be sympathetic to her beyond just out of decency (her life wasn’t great, but she also had default moody beanie nosering teen syndrome XD)
As far as horror goes, I think in general it’s difficult to write intense horror scenes without things getting a bit jumbled when relying purely on audio. Some scenes it’s difficult to distinguish what is happening beyond the noises, where too much is happening at once, and some fall flat because the tension is building and then the sounds happen point by point, you still aren’t sure what happened, and yet a really tense situation just peaked. SPOILERS: The confrontation between Frank and the Sheriff for example was so flat for all the build up. And same when Sonja explained flatly blow by blow when they confronted the monster in the hospital.
Critiques out of the way I like the little pepperings of world building theyre setting up, and some of the unique spins theyre taking on common horror tropes. The reinforcement of ‘humans are the real monsters’ across seasons is something I’m a fan of, and outside of eva/ava and mamere whenever the actors get into a soliloquy they can bring some incredible intensity to their voice and the story. I think it’s well worth a listen— this kind of production is incredibly incredibly difficult, and they’re doing a really good job at creating something fun and yet spooky. :)”
