Unreformed: Mt. Meigs
I grew up in Birmingham, AL and ALWAYS knew of this school. People in Birmingham called it Reform School. I remember adults telling children that if they continued to be problematic, they’d end up at Mt. Meigs. Although I didn’t know the history of the school or the horrendous treatment of Black children, I DID understand that I NEVER wanted to attend. I attended Tuskegee Institute (University). I passed the school each time coming and going back home to Birmingham and I ALWAYS seem to quiet myself as I pass it, remembering its ghosts. Thank you for delving into this facility.
