“Aside from all of the clearly thought out machinations of the day she disappeared her children, Catherine, once in custody admitted to her mother and her husband that she was going to fake mental illness until the statute of limitations had run because what she really wanted was just to go home live with her mom or somewhere else in her community and not have to face up to what she did. Unsure why the ridiculous “ethical” equivocation by the shrink. I don’t understand how she can justify having more concern for the “suffering” of a adult who murdered her toddlers; essentially saying that they had no motivation to “restore” someone to sanity if they were going to have to go to prison. Seriously? There will be no justice for Jacob and Sarah because poor, put upon Catherine doesn’t want to face the consequences of her actions? Give me a break!
Catherine’s “terror” of having to face charges for murdering her children and spending the rest of her life in prison seems like a pretty rational reaction to me. Everything she has done since the day she disappeared her babies had been for secondary gain: to delay and avoid having to take responsibility for her actions.
Fortunately, a clever judge figured a work around: he Nolle Prossed her charges. The method of declination to prosecute at this time preserves the State’s right to charge her if/when she decides to become competent. He ruled that until that day, Catherine will remain involuntarily locked up in a maximum security psychiatric hospital as she is a danger to herself and others. She appealed this ruling and lost, so her plan to wait out the five years, evade the consequences, and live free in her community, has been foiled.
