Doesn’t Add Up
I’ve listened to a lot of true crime podcasts and have seldom had issues trusting the narrative, but this just doesn’t sit right. A woman clearly in the midst of a psychotic break disappears with her son and returns home without him, but Lindsey, fully aware of the mental illness, spends the whole day searching daycares instead of alerting Troy or the police? And Troy lets Catherine direct him between daycares for four hours without raising the alarm? I’m certain these questions and concerns have innocent explanations, but glazing over such information is irresponsible and potentially dangerous. Another problem is that details on the nature of Catherine’s illness and how it affects her behavior are few and far between. There’s nothing besides vague comments regarding poor decision-making and Catherine’s tendency to drive strange places. This is relevant because the family say there was no indication she would ever harm her children, yet they worked to ensure she was never alone with them. What information is missing here? Perhaps the biggest issue in the narrative is the disbelief in Catherine’s incompetence. This woman has been ill from a young age and doesn’t respond well to treatment (evidenced by the fact she was medicated at the time of taking her children.) So, assuming she’s medicated now, what real evidence is there that she’s competent to stand trial? What evidence exists comes from Troy, who stated a belief that Catherine’s actions were born not of paranoia or a psychotic break, but of hate/vengeance/anger at him. I hope future episodes address this, because as it is, it just sounds like Troy is projecting. His anger is understandable, but it also give him an incentive to say anything to see his desire for revenge/justice sated. I sincerely hope that future episodes present solid evidence (rather than “she said this, she said that”) as to exactly why Catherine is, in fact, competent to stand trial. If that information is not explored, then this has the capacity to be a hugely damaging podcast both for Catherine, the family, and those who competency laws are designed to protect.
