Compelling in a rare and precious way
I've been interested in Chris Locke since I saw his YouTube videos with Nathan Fielder (pre-celebrity) and other Canadian comedians, which are some of my favorite things on the internets. (Look them up if you don't know what I'm talking about.) Chris is, in my view, one of the most underappreciated comics currently operating. Your first impression may be that he is a regular, cool, laid back, easy going, chubby goofball -- and these impressions are not wrong -- but keep watching. I think you'll sense a lot more depth and complexity to him. There seems to be a certain intangible something boiling within him but never fully expressed. Something vaguely existential, maybe a species of angst. Whatever it is, it's compelling in a rare and precious way, and I think producers/casting people/people-with-money-who-make-decisions are fools for not noticing it. Anyway, I think that compelling intangible quality is apparent in these episodes. Plus, they're just really fun. Each one has its own flavor, but they're generally a lovely blend of the personal, absurd, and sincere.
