Scholarly podcast in disguise
Although seemingly a podcast about film criticism, I actually think there’s more discussion of moral psychology and philosophy. The title alludes to the 1993 classic The Wizard of Oz and every other episode mentions Pulp Fiction and The Big Lebowski, but if you listen closely, there’s more than film criticism here. Sommers and Pizarro unwittingly walk listeners though psychological and philosophical literatures on morality, ethics, and related issues, describing theory and research entertainingly and cogently. Very Bad Wizards attracts an audience by fronting as a profane and often wildly inappropriate Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel, but then pulls a bait-and-switch where listeners are left learning about human psychology as it relates to morality. Their voices are odd—one sounds like he swallowed a tampon and the other sounds like he’s going through puberty every episode—but if you hang in there for a few episodes, you’ll adapt to the auditory assault. All kidding aside, I love this podcast and I cannot recommend it enough. I regularly steal content and jokes for my classes and research. I only listen to four podcasts: RadioLab, Freakonomics, This American Life, and Very Bad Wizards…and New VB Dub episodes get played first.

Really interesting discussions about psychology and philosophy done in an informal way. Very entertaining and accessible. They give great explanations of experiments and research, using pop culture references to keep you engaged.

This podcast is fantastic. Accessible, breezy, entertaining, and intelligent. After the admittedly irresponsible review of Josh Greene's new book, I wish they'd have him on as a guest. He gets knocked repeatedly throughout the early episodes as a psychopathic utilitarian. I'd love...Read full review »
