Mediocre and a lack of werewolves
I went into this hoping for a funny and compelling mystery in a small town. That there would be a fun and interesting cast of characters and the true villain would be a surprise. Most importantly, I wanted the werewolves the podcast promised me. It unfortunately fell short. The hosts are extraordinarily bland tropes: smart, sticks to the facts girl and her “hilarious” brother. Neither are compelling and never did I feel their bond. There’s an episode that says they had a fight, Artemis found out that Paul was hurt, and rushed to him. ALL of that was done in narration. I never heard any genuine emotion from these hosts and the story suffered for it. Not to mention the rest of the cast. Wayward Guide falls for the trap of “small weird town = everyone is a moron”. I didn’t feel either the comradery that they muse was lost due to the werewolves scare or that falling apart. They just felt like dipshits the whole time and the story suffered for that. I wanted to care about these characters, but they were all punchlines. Oh, and also — if you promise werewolves in your description, don’t only properly introduce the idea of werewolves halfway through. I don’t even know *why* that was the conclusion they drew and not, you know, just a wolf attack.
